North East

The #OfstedBigConversation steering group in the North East had its first meeting with Ofsted on the 1st of May.

The agenda for the meeting was developed from feedback provided in two open events held in the region in September 2013 and January 2014.

Nick Hudson, Ofsted Director for Early Years (including Childminding) and Regional Director for the North East Yorkshire and Humber and John Coleman, Senior HMI Ofsted attended, along with colleagues from a diverse range of early education and childcare settings.

A very open and constructive discussion was held, focusing in particular on the management of complaints from the general public and improving consistency across inspections, as well as several other key areas.

Key action points included opening up the debate about what ‘teaching’ means in the early years and how the quality of provision should be inspected; improving the risk assessment process for managing complaints from the general public and challenging inspectors where judgements appear to based on a preferred pedagogy. A summary of the discussion and action points is available (here).

Following the meeting we were delighted to hear that a new approach to managing complaints from the general public is to be piloted by Ofsted in direct response to feedback received from discussions held across the country: news met with a very big cheer in the North East!

We also welcomed the opportunity for colleagues to email their experience of recent inspections directly to Gill Jones, Deputy Director for Early Years at Ofsted – more details are provided in the meeting notes (link).

We very much look forward to keeping lines of communication open in the coming months and to building strong relationships with Ofsted going forward.

Dr Jo Verrill, Director, Ceeda
Co-Chair, OfstedBigConversation North East Steering Group
